Letter of Appreciation
Dear All,
All praise due to God Almighty for whose blessings we gather today to celebrate as proud Malaysians, proud and grateful to be chosen as one of the delegates to be receiving The Queen Anniversary Awards for this year. This honour we believe is to be the first ever awarded to a Malaysian citizen in its history.
I would like to seize this opportunity to present my greatest appreciation to the Institute for Transport Studies (ITS) and the University of Leeds who have given me the honour to represent the institute to receive this important recognition, out of ten, whose other members are a fellow Philosophical Doctorate student and master students, the University Chancellor, Vice Chancellor, Dean of Faculty, ITS Director and other reputable staff of the university.
My gratitude is extended towards the Government of Malaysia, especially the Ministry of Higher Education and Universiti Malaysia Terengganu together with Malaysian Students Department London (MSD), without their immense support I would not have stood here today.
A small note I would like to share here is, that the Queen Anniversary Award is not a recognition of individual achievement in Transport Studies, but in fact a recognition of the work of collective effort in the area. The ITS have been given prerequisites as to who should be selected to represent the Institute in receiving this award. The criteria is based upon those who have contributed the most points (if you can say this) towards the aggregate marks on which ITS was chosen to as winner of the prestigious award. Allow me to quote a statement from The Royal Anniversary Trust London as follows:
“Please give high priority in your selection of proposed student invitees to those working in the field of your prizes scheme entry. The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh are always keen to meet young people directly involved with the prize winning work”.
I am positive that my selection among the 34 students from different parts of the world studying at ITS, has been based on an overall observation looking at various aspects. Until today, I have been involved in a range of activities such as:
i. My research title The Temporal and Spatial Analysis of Particle Number Count (PNC) in Urban Environment.
ii. Received sponsorship to attend and present my papers unto the Better Air Quality Conference Asian Chapter of the United Nation in Bankok in 2008.
iii. Presenting as a key note speaker at the Conference of Urban Environmental Management and Air Quality in Less Developed Countries in Copenhagen, Denmark. The conference was sponsored and organized by NERI.
iv. I am the Chairman of The University Malaysian Terengganu-Malaysian Student Department UK, Leeds University Conference 2009
v. 'Postgraduate representative for ITS and the Faculty of Environment' University of Leeds.
vi. Received three Travel Awards from The Aerosol Society for UK to date
My involvement in non-academic work includes:
1. First Chairman of The Malaysian PG Association for UK Eire (MPA) whose membership has reached more than 200 since inauguration 15 days ago.
2. Volunteer for Leeds Education
I have also been informed by Berita Harian Malaysia Newspaper that over the last 20 years the has never been a Malaysian Student in Buckingham Palace to receive any form of award except Jimmy Choo. Therefore this achievement should make all Malaysian proud. This is a success for our beloved country, Malaysia and will bring its name to the international stage, God willing.
Certainly this award will motivate me to strive for further excellence in academic and research. My advice to all Malaysian students,
- Excellence is not impossible to achieve, but it requires relentless effort and the highest commitment
- Always have the courage to bring change and to strive for quality in all aspects of endeavours be it personal, academic or other related skills.
- To always give the best to fulfil our country’s aspirations in achieving One Malaysia, God willing.
Last but not least all that is good is from Allah SWT and the weaknesses are mine. My sincere gratitude to my belove husband, my childrens, my dear mum in Malaysia, families and friends for this ceremonious occasion and as we all have been entrusted by our country let us all focus in striving for excellence. We hope for the best for our Religion, Nation and Country.
Thank you all and Jazakumullahukhairan kathira once again.

My Research- Temporal and spatial variations of ultra-fine particles in the urban environment
We know that transport is responsible for a significant amount of air pollution, particularly in urban areas and beside busy roads. Previous research work on air pollution has tended to focus on traffic pollutants such as carbon monoxide (CO), NOx, benzene, sulphur dioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (PM10 & PM2.5), but less so on Ultra-fine particles (UFP). There are relatively few studies that detail urban particle numbers, size distributions and parameters in relation to traffic characteristics. My research focus is to develop a fundamental understanding of the role of traffic characteristics, local meteorological factors and street canyon effects on the concentration of Ultra-fine particles (UFP). This research is important in terms of developing pollution control measures, not least as at present there are no legislative standards in the UK, EU or USA that address particle number concentrations....etc
